An interesting comparison surfaced the other day when I was trying to teach my dog to stay. I had to say it the exact same way, same tone of voice, and use the same hand gesture – otherwise he didn’t understand. With each attempt I began to realize that I wasn’t training him at all, he was training me.
I’ve had this same experience with the web. With each new website I create I have to test it across many browsers and operating systems. I’ve begun to realize the html I write is just like the commands I say to my dog. Working on a website is like training a pack of dogs. Each dog with it’s own personality and attention span. As if training one dog wasn’t hard enough. Some dogs understand what I’m saying, even if I don’t say it correctly. Which is great, until you encounter those stubborn mutts who won’t take it, unless it’s perfect. Then you have those “special needs” pups (eh hum, ie) who need extra hacks just to do something simple.
Sometimes I think it would be nice to breed the best dogs and create one well functioning, attentive & stable dog (err browser). Then we can stop writing hacks and start creating amazing sites that look perfect on every computer, every time.
